If you ever tried to convince your mom or wife to try golf, Sunday is a perfect time to get her started on it because Abercrombie Golf & Country Club is allowing mothers to play for free after 1 p.m. in honour of Mother’s Day.

I’m not entirely convinced that this is a good idea – the wife might become obsessed with it and want to play all the time. Which could mean playing with YOU all the time. In some cases, however, (and maybe in a lot of cases) YOU could be the last person she’d want to spend four hours on a golf course with.

For that matter, if she does take up golf and gets serious about it, it might be the perfect time for YOU to quit the game and spend more peaceful time at home. Talk about a turnaround – I wish I had thought of this years ago.

Now, you might have to put up with her boring golf stories, but you owe her that much, since you’ve been doing that to her for years.

Absence might make the heart grow fonder (sometimes), but familiarity can breed contempt on the golf course, especially if she starts in with the nagging, or reminds you of something you did wrong last winter, bringing it to the forefront again because… well, just because.

Now, if it’s your mom who gets the golf fever and wants to play once a week with you, that’s a different thing – because it’s your mom, so you must obey her wishes, unless you want her to get the switch and adjust that attitude of yours (I’ve heard that can be a very effective way to maintain discipline).

Your mother has put up with a lot over the years, probably much more than you even know, so if you utter the occasional F-bomb because you keep three-putting (guilty), she’s used to your childishness. She’s seen it since you exited the womb, after all: the wanting, the needing, the whining and bawling – and that all before you even finished breakfast.

Mom will even forgive you for your on-course transgressions (she’s forgiven worse, I’d wager), although your mother will likely suggest that it’s time you learned how to behave in public, that it’s a poor reflection on her and the way you were raised.

But once she’s played the game awhile, she will completely understand.

Other Random Thoughts:

• On Wednesday of this week, Dwayne Casey was named NBA’s coach of the year by other coaches around the league, and what could be more fulfilling than getting such an honour from your peers?

Keeping your job, that’s what.

On Friday afternoon, he was fired by the Toronto Raptors after seven seasons at the helm. The Raptors probably feel they’ve gone as far as they can with him, but the franchise’s all-time winningest coach still deserved a better fate. He won’t be out of a job for very long, however – unless he wants to be.

• Most annoying Canadian rock band that still gets played on the radio: early 1980s band Headpins. Awful then, worse now.

• The latest Stanley Cup playoff guesswork: Winnipeg Jets over Vegas Knights, Washington Capital over Tampa Bay Lightning.

• Happy Mother’s Day, mommy. Please send money.
