PICTOU – The Northern Subways Selects captured the provincial female midget AAA hockey title on Saturday in a 1-0 win at the Pictou County Wellness Centre over Metro Boston Pizza.

Trenton’s Katie Pentz scored the game’s only goal in the first period, when she swatted at a loose puck on her backhand as she was falling to her knees on a first-period play, right in front of the opposition net. Lindsey Smith drew an assist on the goal, and netminder Lily Currie, along with the Selects’ defence in front of her, would shut the door the rest of the way.

“It’s definitely a big win for us, especially in our home rink,” Pentz said. “We played a lot better today,” she added, comparing Saturday’s match to a Game 4 loss on Friday.

“We had control of the puck more.”

The Selects headed into the weekend with a 2-0 lead in the championship series; Friday night in Pictou, Pentz had the only goal of the game for the Selects in a 2-1 Metro victory that kept the series going.

The Selects will now represent Nova Scotia at Atlantics, which will take place later this month in East Hants.

“We’re all really excited to go to Atlantics.”
