Bantam A Selects find silver lining

NEW GLASGOW – The Pictou County Bantam A Subway Selects were silver medalists at the Source For Sports tournament on Prince Edward Island.

The Pictou County Bantam A Selects earned silver medals Sunday during the Source for Sports Bantam A Tournament in Summerside, P.E.I. The Selects were undefeated going into the championship game which they lost in a 3-2 shootout to the Halifax Hawks. The Selects fought a hard battle against the Bedford Blues in crossovers Sunday morning, but ended up victorious with a 3-2 win. Megan MacCarthy and Thea Waller scored unassisted goals to tie the scoreboard and the game headed into overtime and then ended with a shootout. MacCarthy and MacKenzie Ells scored during the shootout. 

The Pictou County girls had an hour off before the championship game against the Halifax Hawks that again ended in a shootout to break a tie. The game ended in a 3-2 loss for the Selects. Madison Robertson and Ells scored for Pictou County and goaltender Leigha MacDonald was strong in nets for both of the high-pressure games.

The Bantam A Selects won all three of their games during the round robin competitions. On Friday, the Selects won 5-0 against the River Valley Saint John Storm. Ells had a hat trick while MacCarthy and Lily Wright netted singles.

On Saturday, the Selects defeated the East Prince Wild Cats 4-3 in the first game of the day. Goal scorers were Shalyn Bona, Paige MacDonald, MacCarthy and Ells.

Later that day, goaltender Ashley Niven had her first shutout of the tournament in her second game of the day. The Selects won 5-0 against the Tyne Valley/O’Leary Bantam A girls. Hannah Fraser scored a single while Bona and Ells had two goals each.

Assists during the tournament went to Lauren Hicks, Bona, Robertson, MacDonald, Ryleigh Sutherland, Fraser, Brody Paul, Emma Martin and Biancia Bourgeois.

Bona and Ells were named all-star players for the tournament. The Bantam A Selects are back to regular season play this weekend with games against Cape Breton West and Glace Bay.
