NEW GLASGOW – The NNEC Gryphons captured fifth place at the high school girls basketball provincials on the weekend.

The Gryphons defeated Halifax West 67-55 on Saturday afternoon, their second straight tournament win after a Thursday loss against Horton High school had put them in the consolation bracket.

Jaden MacEachern led all NNEC scorers with 15 points, Courtney Smith tossed in 14 and Lucia MacKay had 13, to go along with eight assists.

The Citadel Phoenix won the provincial banner, beating the C.P. Allen Cheetahs 83-45 in a lop-sided championship game.

Horton won bronze, defeating the Dartmouth High School Spartans.
