Small answered the bell in the first two games, stopping all the Penguins’ shots in regulation and a five-minute overtime on Saturday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
Despite her heroics, the Penguins won the first contest on Saturday 1-0, with veteran Penguin forward Taylor Keeping the only player to score during the shoot-out.
The teams returned to action on Sunday at the Wellness Centre and the game quickly took on the same look as Saturday, with both teams sticking to a tight defensive game, backed by solid goaltending.
The Selects opened the scoring early in the second on an outstanding play by Kaila Reid, assisted by Taylor Perry. Reid and Perry contributed assists on the second goal by Madelyn Bourque late in the second frame to make the final score 2-0.
The series resumes at the East Hants Sportsplex on Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m.
If necessary, game five will be played at the Pictou County Wellness Centre on Sunday.
