MOUNT WILLIAM – The Pictou County Crushers feel they’ve bolstered their roster for the upcoming season.
The Maritime Hockey League club recently signed Cam Scott, a forward from Porter’s Lake, N.S. who played two years of prep school in Connecticut.
Primarily a centre, Scott is described as a versatile player who can also play the wing. While coach Doug Doull wouldn’t commit at this time to saying that Scott will be a Top 6 forward on his club – June is a little early for that – Scott is expected to bring character, leadership, a 200-foot game and some playmaking ability to the Crushers, who missed the playoffs this past season for the first time in team history.
After talking with some scouts about the 19-year-old, Doull said the player’s “character stood out, and we worked from there.
“He has the ability to be a catalyst for us. He will bring a presence to our forward group.”
Scott played Midget with the Halifax McDonald’s prior to his prep school and said he’s heard good things about the Crushers organization from veteran Crushers like Jacob Hickey and Dylan Riley.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity with coach Doull. We had a couple of good talks and it’s a very comfortable fit. Everything I’ve been told about the Crushers and the coach has been very, very good.”
Told that Crusher fans are used to success and don’t like losing hockey games, Scott replied: “Perfect. Neither do I.”
Crushers general manager Chad McDavid also announced a trade with the South Shore Lumberjacks that will bring Liam MacKinnon to the team, in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick and future considerations.
A right-shooting defenceman with good skating ability, MacKinnon captained the Cape Breton West Islanders midget team last season. “We’re very excited to add someone of his calibre to our blue line,” McDavid said, adding that the Crushers appear close to making more roster additions.
Earlier this month, Pictou County completed their end of a prior trade when they sent 20-year-old defenceman Quinten Johnson, a two-year Crusher, to the Valley Wildcats.
