MOUNT WILLIAM – Edges sharp, smiles at the ready.
It’s time to perform.
More than 250 skaters, ranging in age from six to 17, will participate in the 2018 junior provincial figure skating championships this weekend at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. The event is open to the public.
“Not only are the skaters excited to skate and show off our beautiful Pictou County Wellness Centre, but the parents are, as well,” said Angie Coady-Pennington, instructor with the Mariposa East Figure Skating Club, which is hosting the event.
Along with about 18 skaters from the Mariposa club, the Thoburn-based East Pictou Silver Blades are expected to have a half-dozen competitors taking part this weekend.
“It’s about a provincial title, but also an opportunity to have another skate before Atlantics,” Coady-Pennington said.
“They’ll be coming from Yarmouth, and all the way to Cape Breton. Anyone who has competed at a national championship is not eligible for this competition.”
The Atlantic figure skating championships will be held this year in East Hants, in early April. The skaters will be on the ice Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and will go to 9 p.m., while Sunday’s action will take place from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
“We look forward to hosting and watching over 250 skaters from Nova Scotia, including many from Pictou County” said event chair Susan Higdon.
“We welcome their families, their coaches and Skate Nova Scotia Officials to our county.”
Coady-Pennington said a lot of legwork has gone into preparing for the provincial championships and the athletes are hoping people will come out to be entertained.
“There has been a lot of work and effort by all the volunteers (and) the skaters would like to see as many people come out as possible," she said.
“I know this event is going to be a very positive and memorable experience for all that are involved mainly due to the great committee that has been working on this the past months. They have gone above and beyond and also to our fabulous Mariposa members for all their efforts, from donating food, artistic skills to donating their time to help this weekend.. and a huge Thank you to the towns, county and many community businesses that helped make this weekend possible.”
