The NNEC Gryphons opened the annual Anse MacDonald Invitational high school basketball tournament in style on Friday afternoon.

Playing on their home court against the Northumberland Regional High School Nighthawks, the Gryphons picked up a 97-68 victory over their counterparts from Alma. Layton Williams scored 32 points for NNEC despite missing a good chunk of the fourth quarter when he got banged up on the court, and centre Chris Gillin had a 24-point effort for the Gryphons, who held a 13-point lead at the half before pulling away in the fourth quarter.

The Nighthawks offence was led by Glen Cox, who poured in 40 points.

The Gryphons were to play on Friday night at 6 p.m. against Avon View, while NRHS has a Saturday game scheduled for 9 a.m., also against Avonview.

Other teams taking part in the round-robin tournament are Halifax West, Park View and Central Kings. The two Saturday crossover games that will determine the championship pairings will start at 1 p.m., while the championship game has a scheduled 5 p.m. start time.
