BRIDGEWATER, N.S. – Another valiant effort from the Northern Subway Selects came up just short.

The Selects lost 4-1 to the St. Albert Slash (Alberta) on Wednesday at the Esso Cup, the AAA Midget female national championship tournament being played in Bridgewater.

The Selects stayed with St. Albert for 50 minutes before St. Albert, who began to out-play and out-chance the Selects in the third period, broke through and scored with less than nine minutes remaining. They would tack on to more in a span of 2:33 to put the game out of reach.

Maddie Quinn had the only goal for the Northern Selects, with Jensen Arsenault and Eva Wornell getting assists on the play. Goaltender Jenna Landry kept her team in the game with a 34-save afternoon against the defending Esso Cup champions.

With a record of 1-2-1, the Selects in all likelihood will need to win their final round-robin game to reach the medal round. The Northern Selects will play Thursday against the Saskatoon Stars, who were unbeaten going into their tilt on Wednesday night against the host Metro Boston Pizza.
