The Pictou County Lightning U14 boys team hosted a six-team tournament at New Glasgow Academy over the weekend.

The visiting teams participating included Basketball Nova Scotia (Coach Denton Anthony), Basketball Nova Scotia (Coach Michael Barrie), Fall River Selects, St. Margaret’s Bay Furey and Basketball Cape Breton.

In their first game on Friday the Lightning, coached by Robbie MacGregor, defeated the Fall River Rebels by about a 20-point margin said assistant coach Ryan King.

Saturday they played against the Basketball Nova Scotia team coached by Denton Anthony.

“They’re probably the best team in Atlantic Canada,” King said. The Lightning lost that game by about 50 points.

King said they had a great first quarter against their opponents but their opponents wore them down on the path to victory.

Next they faced the Basketball Cape Breton and lost by about 15 points.

In the end, the hosts finished fourth with Basketball Nova Scotia winning first.

While they would have preferred more wins, King said it was a great chance for the players to see some great competition and compete against some of the best teams in the province.

Next up for the Lightning is an exhibition game on Saturday against the Grade 9 team from North Nova Education Centre.
