TRENTON – It was like the 1970s came roaring back.
The Pictou County Junior Scotians hammered the Cumberland County Blues 10-1 on Sunday in Trenton, in a game that saw a brawl take place midway through the second period.
Blair Dewtie fired a hat trick, Jacob Pentz scored once and set up three others and Robert Burrows had a pair of goals for Pictou County, who received single tallies from James Murphy, Morgan Timmons, David Culberson and Ryan Dunfield.
Jordan Harrison had the only goal for the Blues, who have lost 24 straight Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League games.
“I give them credit,” Scotians captain Brandon Verge said of Cumberland County.
“Those guys bring a full bench, and I respect them for showing up to play every night.”
The Scotians were up 6-1 in the second period when the two teams went into Broad Street Bullies mode; a little bit of shoving between two players, a few words exchanged, and before long the snowball was turning into an avalanche.
“I couldn’t see much of it, really,” said Scotians coach Verge, “but from what I was told, it was guys sticking up for each other and I’m not gonna get on my team for that. I don’t want them fighting, but they’re looking after each other when they go to war, and I’m perfectly fine with that.”
Burrows, Ethan Snell, Lucas Rushton and Ryan MacDonald all got into scraps and were thrown out of the game at that point, while four Blues players were also tossed for fighting.
Scotians captain Ryan Dunfield got into a fight with less than two minutes to go in the third period and he, along with Snell, Rushton, Burrows and MacDonald, were to miss Monday’s game in Port Hawkesbury (and possibly more) due to suspension, as will Verge.
The Scotians are at the Strait Pirates on Monday, and on Tuesday will travel to Glace Bay for a showdown with the Miners, weather depending.
Pictou County managed to gain some ground on the Miners, who lost twice on the weekend and are only four points up on the Scotians. Each team has five games remaining in the regular season schedule.
