Ray Wagg expects there will be at least a few kilts and probably some bagpipes on the golf course this week.

The 24th annual Summer Street Scramble will be held Friday with a Scottish theme teams are encouraged to embrace. This year is a particularly special year for Summer Street as they are celebrating 50 years of existence, said Wagg, who is co-chair of the golf tournament.

The Summer Street Scramble is the largest fundraiser of the year for Summer Street Industries, a non-profit that provides services to people with intellectual disabilities.

Consistently organizers have seen strong support for the community for this event.

“I think first of all the people who participate believe in the work that we do,” said Bob Bennett, Summer Street executive director. “We try to make it fun for them and make it easy for them to support us and feel good about supporting us.”

The golfing starts at 8 a.m. on Friday with a shotgun start, although many people stop by earlier to get breakfast before heading out.

Bennett said they would like to make $150,000 in the day if possible and is confident it could happen.

If it’s as successful as it has been in the past this year’s total could help the Scramble reach a milestone.

“To date we’ve raised $2,884,000,” Wagg said. “Naturally we’re hoping this will be the year we break $3 million.”

The event is already sold out with 175 golfers on 35 teams scheduled to take part.

With the weather forecast looking favourable, Wagg expects it’ll be an enjoyable day for all involved.
