St. Mary’s Garden Club will expand its contribution to the Sherbrooke Community with additional help from volunteers and funding in 2014.
The St. Mary’s Garden Club has provided flower boxes for the front of the Royal Bank and the entrance to Sherbrooke Village Museum for a number of years. This year, it was quick to respond to an invitation by Sherbrooke Councillor Debbie Findlay for financial support towards providing hanging additional flower baskets to be placed along the Main Street and at the ends of the bridges on Hwy 7 in Sherbrooke.
Mary Baker, president of St. Mary’s Garden Club, said that “Sherbrooke is a pretty village and the residents of the village take pride in their homes which shows through their well-maintained properties.
The shop owners keep the planters in front of their shops filled with seasonal flowers and vegetation, adding vibrancy and color to businesses on Main Street. It only seemed fitting that there should be flowers along the street as well.
Elsa West, a member of the garden club said, “Along with the financial assistance from funds supplied by Councillor Findlay, the group was incredibly fortunate to have Donnie MacMillan of MacMillan Nurseries prepare and provide the baskets at a very generous price. Because of this, we were able to obtain 20 baskets for this inaugural year. The brackets for hanging the plants were supplied by Charles Fraser of Highland Building Supplies at a discounted price”.
The key element in keeping the baskets in good order is to ensure they are watered on a regular basis. Again, the Garden Club was very fortunate when Darrel Beaver said he would be pleased to look after the daily watering and fertilizing on a volunteer basis!
The Garden Club is a volunteer, non-profit organization and must raise funds for each of its projects. We feel that 20 baskets is a good start for this year but would like to increase the number in future years. This could be possible if individuals and businesses would sponsor baskets. To this end, St. Mary’s Garden Club would greatly appreciate any assistance, financially and physically in adding to the beauty and charm of Sherbrooke.
St. Mary’s Garden Club will be hosting the Eastern NS Garden Club Association Fall Rally on October 18, 2014 at the St. Mary’s District Lion’s Hall in Sherbrooke.
