Finding a vision for your home — one that will add to the happiness you already have — can be challenging sometimes. You want to give it a face lift, either big or small, inside or out, but where do you begin?

I like sparkle and the colour black, and if there is a way to incorporate pieces of those two things I am happy. But there are a few things that need to be considered before you start — and these things are the same no matter if it’s your first project or your 10th. One of the most important — you need to decide if you are going to involved or not, and if you are, what is your role? The more informed you are, the smoother things will go.

Vision:

Be specific on what you want, whether it is built-in bookcases in your hallway, a new bathroom in the basement, or just sconces on your walls. It removes lots of wasted time.

Communication:

Listen to the experts when you need guidance because two heads are better than one — and they most times are trained and have been at it longer than us.

Research:

Shopping is fun but you need to do research about finding the perfect fabrics, materials, wall coverings and even the right trades people. Then you can shop.

Organization:

Knowing who is doing what and when is key to the success of a project, especially if you are not involved.

Budget:

How much money are you allotting to make your vision a reality? And remember, a small pool of money should be put aside in case you come across a problem or hiccups.

Time:

Are there windows or cabinet orders involved or are you ordering of new sofas or chairs? Remember, just because delivery dates are given, things can go sideways fast.

Now that you have a path to at least start, why not do a walk of your home, outside and inside, make a plan, and look to see what is possible with your dream.
