TRENTON, N.S. — In honor of Pride Month, the Pictou County Rainbow Society has raised the rainbow flag in Trenton Park.
Pride month celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and two-spirit people's impact on history and culture at home and around the world, while commemorating the stuggles and losses of the past.
2019 marks the 50th anniversary of when homosexuality was decriminalized in Canada, and it was in 1978 when artist and gay rights activist Gilbert Baker designed the flag now flying in Trenton and around the world.
“It’s important for people to see that their governments recognize their equal rights,” Joy Polly told The News just before the ceremony on June 17. Joining Polley were Trenton Mayor Shannon MacInnis and Vania MacMillan of the Pictou County Centre for Sexual Health, and about 50 students from Trenton elementary and middle schools.
Before the flag was raised, students head about what the rainbow flag actually represents.
“It’s to be proud,” MacMillan told the students. “Proud of who you are, and who you love.”
