NEW GLASGOW, N.S. — The Pictou County Sport Heritage Hall of Fame has a new keeper. Long-time curator Barry Trenholm handed the keys over to Michael Malcolm.
“Barry’s the man,” said Malcolm during an interview at the Hall of Fame on 340 East River Rd., New Glasgow. “Actually, he gave me my first ever pair of golfing shoes.”
Malcolm grew up in Pictou County and has both played and coached at a national level in a variety of sports says that he’s looking forward to taking the helm at a place which celebrates Pictou County’s diverse and storied past preserved in the hall of fame.
Beginning in 1989, the hall’s founder Billy Dee had also been its curator until his death in 2008. That’s when Trenholm took over.
After announcing his resignation earlier this year, a three-person search committee made up of Westville rep Lenny White, New Glasgow rep Clyde Fraser and Pictou rep Eric Daley got to work in finding Trenholm’s replacement, and on Dec. 5, Malcolm officially took over the role.
“I love sports, and I grew up in Pictou County so I knew a lot of the sports legends,” said Malcolm. Malcolm also spoke to the historical significance of the hall of fame.
“I have a great interest in history,” he said. ‘I know about a lot of the stuff from the 70s and am looking forward to going back further.”
In all, the hall of fame houses thousands of artifacts, scrapbooks, medals and more. At every turn and on every wall, there are trophies, medals, plaques, equipment and press clippings dating as far back as the 1940s throughout the hall.
Malcolm said that he’s eager to work with the hall of fame’s board of directors in raising its profile, “throughout the county and the province.”
