STELLARTON, N.S. — It took all morning, but at 1:00 p.m. on Dec. 7 over 100 people had finished work on their houses. Now they can eat them.
“It’s an event where kids and families can come and be as creative as they want to be” said Ellen Fanning, executive director of the Pictou County United Way at the Museum of Industry.
On Dec. 6 Fanning and a group of ten volunteers spent the day assembling 105 gingerbread houses in preparation for Holiday at the Museum.
There were 104 people registered for the gingerbread house fundraiser, putting the finishing touches on their houses. An unnamed candy donor supplied all the décor: rockets, skittles, smarties, marshmallows and liquorice sticks.
There was plenty to go around, and it’s fair to say that not all of the candy made it onto the houses.
That’s why the United Way partnered with the Highland Dental Centre.
“Candy and toothbrushes go hand in hand,” joked Dr. Alan MacIntosh who, on top of helping with building gingerbread houses, was busy giving away free dental supplies for people to take home.
For Fanning, the event is much more than just a fundraiser.
“This is a great way to bring the community together and celebrate the holiday season,” she said. “And partnering with the museum has been great to help build those connections.”
