PICTOU LANDING, N.S. — Pictou Landing First Nation welcomed people from throughout Atlantic Canada as well as Quebec and beyond at its 29th annual Mawio’mi this weekend.

Mawio’mi means to gather and that’s what this annual celebration aims to be.

“Everyone is so inviting and we help each other through things,” said organizer Haley Bernard.

People of all ages from newborn babies to elders take part she said.

The theme this year in Pictou Landing was Honouring the Water.

“We chose that because this is our last year of this fight,” Bernard said, referring to the closure of the Boat Harbour Treatment Facility which is legislated to happen in January 2020.

“It was important for us to choose that to honour the fight that we’ve gone through the last decades,” Bernard said.
