PICTOU, N.S. — A plea hearing for a man charged in the death of Brenda Bernard of Pictou Landing First Nation has been adjourned to a later date.
Kyle Francis, 32 was arrested and charged on June 9 after the pickup truck that he was driving struck and killed Bernard who was walking on the side of the road.
“She was a great woman,” Bernard’s sister, Bridget Worthen, told The News outside the Pictou Provincial Court.
“She was a volunteer in our community. She raised four beautiful boys. She was helping my sister raise her children.”
Worthen was with a group of Bernard’s family members and friends who were at court on July 22 when Francis was scheduled to enter a plea.
The matter has been adjourned until Aug 19. Francis has filed for designation of council and was not in court on July 22.
Worthen told The News that she will be there on the 19th.
“I feel like we’re going to have to re-live this all over again,” she said. “He took a life. He took my sister’s life. That’s never going to come back.”
