PICTOU, N.S.

Pictou County has done it again. The 44th annual Pictou County Christmas Fund Telethon was a success, once more bringing in more than $87,000 in pledges during the campaign on Sunday Nov. 25.

Entertainers provided music throughout the day on Sunday at the deCoste Entertainment Centre while volunteers took pledges via phone.

“The people of Pictou County are so generous,” said Monique Sobey, who has been involved with the event for the last 14 years.

She said for her and other volunteers it’s a great way to kick off the Christmas season. She personally enjoys the music, the crowds and the way people come together.

“It’s kind of become part of peoples’ traditions,” she said. “People in Pictou County know the need is here and that times get tough.”

All of the money is dispersed directly to people in need to help alleviate the financial struggle during the holiday season. An application period was held in November and the money will be distributed on Dec. 12 and Dec. 13.

“After people go and honour their pledges, we immediately take that money and distribute it to everyone who registered.”

For New Glasgow disbursement of the funds will be held on Dec. 12 and Dec. 13 from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. at Summer Street Industries. For Pictou, disbursement will be on Dec. 13. from 1:30 p.m.-4 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church Hall in Pictou.

Sobey encourages all those who took part to get out soon and honour their pledges. In the past, she said they’ve never had a problem, often receiving more money than was pledged.

Pledges can be honoured at any Pictou County bank, the East Coast Credit Union, the Pictou Advocate or at Atlantic Insurance in New Glasgow.
