County council will honour its commitment to donate $7,500 to the organization that is bringing an Iraqi family to Pictou County.

A few years ago, council made the commitment, and on March 18 they followed through.

The Iraqi family had been living as refugees in Turkey for more than four years and were welcomed to Westville on March 20.

One councillor doesn’t agree with the expenditure.

“I can’t support it,” said Peter Boyles. “I’m getting calls from people who don’t have oil in their tanks. I think it’s about time we think of our own.”

The Al-Shaltan family includes a couple who are in their 60s and an adult son in his 20s.

Their hometown of Bartella was overrun by ISIS in 2014.

For its part, Warm Hearts has an apartment in downtown Westville.
