SYDNEY, N.S. — A fourth man has now been charged in connection with a vicious beating in 2016 of a Cape Breton man that left him with permanent brain damage.

David James Bishop, 37, of Dartmouth, was arrested Thursday and charged with aggravated assault, forcible confinement, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and being an accessory after the fact.

Bishop appeared in Pictou provincial court and was remanded until Nov. 12.

Charged previously were Donald Melbourn Messenger, 49, of Broughton; William Jeffery Giles, 46, of Westville; and Charles Jardine Hayman, 50, of Thorburn.

The three men have all pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated assault, forcible confinement, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and accessory after the fact. A provincial court trial is now scheduled for Feb. 25.

The offences for all four accused are alleged to have occurred between June 6-7, 2016, after a Sydney man was found bleeding and beaten inside a truck parked along the side of Highway 105 in Glendale, Inverness Co.

The victim suffered significant injuries, including brain damage.

After an RCMP investigation, police allege the victim was assaulted inside a former biker gang clubhouse in New Glasgow - Outlaw Motorcycle Gang - before he was driven to Cape Breton and abandoned along the side of the road.

The victim continues to recover from his injuries.
