Police confirmed Sunday that 32-year-old Kristin Elizabeth Johnston has been identified as the victim of a homicide inside a Purcells Cove home.
Officers were originally called to the Oceanview Drive residence, just off Purcells Cove Road, at about 7:45 on Saturday morning for an “unknown trouble call,” and found Johnston’s body inside the home.
Johnston was the owner of Bikram Yoga Halifax, which later changed its name to 42 Degrees before closing down last month, sources told Metro on Sunday.
According to the Nova Scotia joint stock registry, a woman named Kristin E. Johnston owned Bikram Yoga, as well as a numbered company associated with the former downtown yoga studio.
Johnston’s death was ruled a homicide -- the municipality’s third this year -- after an autopsy by the medical examiner’s office Sunday morning.
Officers arrested one man in relation to the homicide, who had to be brought to hospital for treatment of what police are calling significant, though non-life threatening, injuries.
He was released from custody later in the day Saturday “pending treatment of his injuries." Police said Sunday afternoon that the man remains a person of interest, but couldn’t confirm whether he’d be arrested when his condition improved.
“We can’t say for sure, but certainly our investigation will progress, and we do hope to speak to him, as he is a person of interest,” Halifax Regional Police spokesperson Theresa Rath said Sunday.
“We’re not looking for anybody else in this file.”
Rath said another man went voluntarily to police headquarters on Saturday for an interview, after which “his involvement has been ruled out.”
She said the victim was the owner of the home on Oceanview Drive, and the person of interest and the man who was interviewed by police Saturday were both residents.
The scene at 17 Oceanview Drive remained taped off throughout the day Sunday, as detectives and a police forensics team continued to scour the home and the backyard for evidence.
Rath said it was expected police wouldn’t release the scene until sometime Monday.
