NEW GLASGOW, N.S. — The Ward 1 election results are in.

The official results will be announced by Deputy Returning Officers on May 7, but as it stands at the moment, Jocelyn Dorrington is the winner with 226 votes.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Dorrington who had to break away to take a phone call from her father, Francis Dorrington, who had also been councilor of Ward 1 for more than 20 years.

Dorrington’s win will make her the first woman of African Nova Scotian heritage to hold a council seat in Pictou County’s history.

“My dad instilled a love of politics in me,” said Dorrington after she finished talking with him moments before.

“Municipal politics is the most important to me because you are representing the people you live and work and play with,” she said. “It’s about them. You’re just their voice.”
