NEW GLASGOW – A longtime community volunteer and musician has lost her battle with cancer.

New Glasgow resident Emma Lee Stewart died Wednesday evening. In May 2010, Stewart had received news that her cancer had returned and in July 2010, learned it was metastatic breast cancer, for which there is currently no cure.

Stewart has been heavily involved in the community for the past two decades, ranging from chairing the New Glasgow Music Festival, being the founding chair of the New Glasgow Jubilee, former board member of the New Glasgow Dragon Boat Society, board member of the Tearmann Society for Abused Women, provincial chair of Breast Cancer Network Nova Scotia and founder of the Reason for Hope Society, a society dedicated to the elimination of cancer, that had begun shortly after her diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in 2007.

See Friday’s edition of The News for a tribute to Stewart.
