Man charged with second degree murder in the death of Nicole Campbell

BREAKING: A 36-year-old man will appear in court Monday to face charges of second degree murder in the death of Nicole Campbell. Sources have said the man's name is Robert Jason MacKenzie. He was known by some as Jason.

The man was arrested on Thursday around 11:30 a.m.  in front of a Temperance Street building where Campbell’s body was found Wednesday.

He has been remanded into custody and will appear in Provincial Court in Pictou Monday morning at around 10:30 a.m. Friday around 1 p.m. he was seen being loaded into a sheriff's van wearing the same shorts and muscle shirt he had been wearing when he was picked up on Thursday.

Const. Ken MacDonald Police would not release the identity of the man, but said he is known to police. 

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, New Glasgow Regional Police received a 911 call, which led police to an apartment on Temperance Street. MacDonald said it was not the victim that called 911.

An autopsy is scheduled to be completed in Halifax today but the cause of death is not being released as the investigation continues.

Officers with the New Glasgow Regional Police Major Crimes and the New Glasgow Regional Police Forensic Identification Unit Service are currently investigating and officers could be seen at the scene throughout the day Thursday and Friday.

The homicide on Temperance Street, New Glasgow on Wednesday brings to mind other violent crimes in the area of downtown New Glasgow.

Jan. 1, 2007

Jamie Lynn Walsh, 21, was found dead just a few houses down from where this week’s death occurred on Temperance Street. Matthew Craig Anderson, 27, was charged with strangling her and received a life sentence. He is not eligible for parole until January 2021.

Oct. 9, 2011

Amber Kirwan, 19, disappeared after leaving the Dooly’s in downtown New Glasgow. Her body was found a month later in Heathbell. Christopher Falconer was convicted of killing her and sentenced in January 2014 to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years

Oct. 12, 2013

Scott Jones was stabbed in the back while walking to the Roseland Cabaret. The injuries left him paralyzed. Shane Matheson was charged with the stabbing and has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Glenn Fraser was left in critical condition after being punched outside the Roseland Cabaret in New Glasgow and striking his head against the sidewalk. He spent 10 weeks in hospital where for a time family wasn’t sure whether he’d live or not. Steven James Lawrence, was sentenced in May 2015 to eight months of house arrest for assault causing bodily harm.
