A new form of exercise will be available to residents walking on trails in New Glasgow, thanks to an $18,000 federal contribution.
Central Nova MP Sean Fraser announced the money on June 22 at Carmichael Park near the Samson trail where five of 10 new BenchFit units will be placed. The funding is part of the federal New Horizons for Seniors.
Benchfit is a growing trend in other parts of the world and includes various different activities that people can do at each unit. They consist of simple exercises appropriate for all ages.
Fraser said he and his family are regular users of New Glasgow’s trails which are ideal for walking or biking and believes this addition will be one that will be well used by seniors as well as other people on the trails.
“Now there will be a new piece of infrastructure that allows them to take on physical activity as well,” he said.
New Glasgow Mayor Nancy Dicks said the project fits well with their goals as a town and they were happy to receive the grant money for it.
“The Town of New Glasgow recently launched the 'New Glasgow Active Living Strategy'. Our vision is a vibrant and inclusive community where everyone belongs and everyone gets to participate. New Glasgow is also one of the first communities to implement the Age Friendly Action Plan,” she said. “BenchFit is a result of both these plans and helps create an environment that is inclusive to all ages, removing barriers and creating opportunities. When people are given the opportunity to become more active, then they are more liable to participate in community events and programs.”
