Municipality of the County of Pictou Warden Robert Parker said all municipal units have agreed in principle with creating a REN and the next step is to work out the inter-municipal agreement in more detail.

“The funding formula will be the most contentious thing,” he said, adding that issues need to be worked out as well in regard to a unit wanting to withdraw from REN after it is established.

Regional Enterprise Networks provide regional economic leadership and help develop regional economic strategies, while supporting small, local businesses. They were introduced in 2013 after the federal government cut funding to the 12 regional development agencies in the province.

REN was first introduced in 2013 after the federal government cut funding to individual regional development agencies that were geared towards promoting economic development in Nova Scotia communities.

Parker said county CAOs are currently working on the inter-municipal agreement and it will go back to all councils for approval.

“We have to have some patience,” he said.
