New calves in local buffalo herd

The buffalo population increased by two a few weeks ago when two babies were born to the herd belonging to Marinus Verhagen of Linacy.

He says the calves are a male and female, born to two different mothers around the same time.  

He estimates they are currently about 300 pounds. The adults average a weight of about 1,800 pounds.

The babies are very self sufficient from the start of the life. They stand almost immediately after birth and nurse up to nine months but eat grass in the first month. A calf born to the herd last year continues to thrive.
