Taxes in the Town of New Glasgow are staying the same for another year.

The town approved its budget at its council meeting on Monday night. Council is maintaining both its residential and commercial tax rates, along with the current user fees for the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

For the 14th year in a row, the residential rate will remain at $1.82 per $100 of assessment. There is no change in the commercial tax rate for the eighth consecutive year. It will continue to be $4.40 per $100 of assessment.

The annual solid waste charge per residential dwelling unit for up to three units will be

maintained at $150. for fiscal 2018-2019. The user pay formula is more equitable than

including this service in an across the board tax rate, which has a different impact on residents depending on the assessment value of their property, Mayor Nancy Dicks said in her statements about the budget. The user pay formula ensures that residential multi-units pay for the solid waste collection services they are using as opposed to single dwellings subsidizing these services in the tax rate.

The pollution control rate is also being maintained at $1.34 per cubic metre of water consumed.

For the fiscal year 2018-2019, the Town of New Glasgow will operate on a balanced budget of $19,357,289. For the fiscal year 2018-2019, the New Glasgow Water Utility will operate on a budget of $4,421,228.

There will over $5 million in capital work between the Town of New Glasgow and the New Glasgow Water Utility.
