NEW GLASGOW – A New Glasgow businessman will be representing the Progressive Conservative Party in Pictou East in the next provincial election.

Tim Houston, a chartered accountant and co-owner of the local business Velsoft, won the nomination on the first ballot Tuesday during a meeting at Frank H. MacDonald School.

A native of Halifax, Houston lived in Bermuda for 12 years before returning to Nova Scotia in 2007 where he took up residence with his wife and children in Little Harbour.

“I am new to politics,” he said. “I am not a career politician and it was never a big interest of mine until I moved back here and got into business and saw how the decisions that government is making on our behalf impact our lives."

After speaking with people in the county, he decided to seek the Pictou East nomination for the Progressive Conservative Party.

Houston said he was drawn to the PC Party by its leader, Jamie Baillie, and the party’s platform, which supports employers and employees.

“Pictou County needs a voice,” he said. “I want Pictou East to have a voice in Halifax. We need true representation that will take on the NDP government and fight against the deterioration of rural roads and eroding hospital services.”
