NEW GLASGOW, N.S. — Students, do you want to win $500?

The Pictou County Roots Society is once again hosting an essay contest. The winner will received the Clyde F. Macdonald Annual Cultural Prize of $500.

The contest is open to students in grades 10, 11 and 12 who are currently enrolled in a high school in Pictou County.

Lloyd Tattrie, of the Pictou County Roots Society, said information about the contest has been sent out to schools.

“We’re anticipating a good number of quality entries,” he said.

The purpose of the contest is to get students digging into local history.

The essay must be about a notable event or person(s) from Pictou County. It can be from the student’s own personal family history. The essay must be original and include research with sources and quotations, using proper citation at the end of the story. The essay should be between four and eight pages long, double-spaced. Pictures related to the topic may be included.

The deadline is May 10, 2019. Entries can be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to Pictou County Roots Society c/o Pictou Antigonish Regional Library Box 276, New Glasgow, N.S. B2H5E3.

The contest is named for Clyde Macdonald, a retired judge in Pictou County who has written more than 15 historical books about Pictou County. The books have been donated to local school libraries and are a potential source for students. Students are also encouraged to visit the Roots Room in the New Glasgow library for assistance from a member of the Pictou County Roots Society.
