SALT SPRINGS, N.S. — Ninety years ago, on Sept. 29, a new country church opened the doors to its congregation.
St. Luke’s United Church of Canada in Salt Springs was part of the newly formed United Church of Canada.
Over those 90 years this sacred building has seen many joys and sorrows. Its pews were filled each Sunday as families came to worship together.  Children’s voices echoed through the walls as they gathered for Sunday School classes and concerts. Ladies of the congregation have always been a large part of the church as the Women’s Missionary Society and later the United Church Women. There have been countless old-fashion dinners, teas, plays and camaraderie over the years.
Fellowship has always remained a strong aspect of St. Luke’s. Many hands make light work, as demonstrated a few years ago when 90-plus apple pies were made from scratch in just two hours. There has always been ongoing, diligent work to keep the church in good repair and updated to modern standards.
Although the numbers have decreased in recent years there is still an enthusiastic congregation who are working hard to commemorate the 90th anniversary of St. Luke’s United Church on Sept. 29, at 7 p.m.
Ironically, it is 90 years to the day of the first service. An original newspaper clipping of the event in 1929 has been located and the service will try to follow a similar format.
A collection of historical facts will be displayed during the fellowship time following the service. All are cordially invited to share in this special worship service.
