Scott ready to compete in mid-amateur golf tournament

Kevin Scott has been swinging golf clubs since he was a child playing with his father’s putters in the back yard.

Kevin Scott has been a member of the Abercrombie Golf Club for 25 years. This weekend he’s taking part in the NSGA Mid-Amateur that’s being hosted by the club.

From the time he was a young boy trailing his dad around the greens, the Abercrombie Golf Club has been part of his life. For 25 years he’s been a member.

That’s part of the reason why he feels confident heading into this weekend’s Nova Scotia Golf Association's Mid-Amateur hosted at his home course.

“I’m not nervous going into this one as much as other ones,” he said. “It almost feels like another round of golf.”

Approximately 150 golfers will take part in the three-day event from July 18-20 at the Abercrombie course. The mid amateur is open to golfers 25-years-old and above and will include some of the best golfers from across the province as well as a few from New Brunswick.

Last year Scott placed 17th, but is feeling confident he can do well in this tournament.

“I’ve been playing pretty well up to this point. I’m hoping I can keep it going for the weekend,” he said. “Each day is a different day when you’re playing golf. It doesn’t take much for your swing to disappear.”

He said he feels strong with his putting and has been hitting decent off the tees. In addition to a familiar course, he’ll also have about a dozen members of Abercrombie to play with too.

He’s glad that the golf course will be getting some positive attention.

“I think we have a very nice golf course that probably doesn’t get as much recognition as it should,” he said, crediting Jim Nix and others who manage the greens. “It’s always in fantastic shape. The golf industry is struggling and it’s tough finding money, but they do a tremendous job with what they have. It’s nice to showcase it to the province.”

All three days of the tournament, which features the best mid-amateur players in the province, are free to the public to go watch.

This year’s provincial team will be comprised of the top three finishers at the event. They will travel to Barrie, Ont. to play the Barrie Country Club from Sept. 16-19.
