Smile Cookie campaign underway in Pictou County

NEW GLASGOW, N.S. — The annual Smile Cookie campaign is underway at Tim Hortons locations in Pictou County until Sept. 22, with proceeds from the sale of the cookies going to the Pictou County Food Banks and the Pictou County Fuel Fund. The food banks provide emergency supplies of food, while the Fuel Fund supplies families in urgent need of heating fuels, to meet the organization’s goal that no child should go cold in Pictou County. This is a major fundraiser for each organization. The cookies cost $1, with 100 per cent of the funds raised from the cookie sales being donated to the charities.

In 2023, Aberdeen had 22 emergency visits due to overdoses, the Colchester-East Hants Health Centre had 72 and the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre had 56. According to Dr. Janet Sommers, the number of hospitalizations due to drug overdoses hasn't changed dramatically, but the drugs being used has changed.
