The eighth annual Sobeys Star of Christmas Food Bank Drive has proven a success once again.

Through the kindness of employees, customers, suppliers and the Sobeys Inc. Better Food Fund, a total of $653,127 was raised in Atlantic Canada during the three-week campaign. This brings the Sobeys Star of Christmas Food Bank Drive total to over $5 million in food and funds donated to local food banks since 2010.

“Local food banks across Atlantic Canada play a vital role helping families get the nourishment they need,” said Paul MacLeod, VP Atlantic Store Operations, Sobeys Inc. “I’m proud that Sobeys employees, customers and suppliers came together and contributed so wholeheartedly to this cause.”

Sobeys’ network of more than 300 stores, distribution centres, and corporate offices in Atlantic Canada participated in the annual campaign including Sobeys, Foodland and participating Co-ops, Needs, Sobeys express, Fast Fuel, and TRA Wholesale locations. Stores raised funds by selling $2 Star of Christmas Stars and pre-filled Hampers of Hope and encouraged customers to donate a non-perishable food item at their local stores.

Customer donations were matched by the Sobeys Inc. Better Food Fund in the amount of $100,000.

During the holiday season Sobeys also held an online contest where stores uploaded videos of group’s singing Star of Christmas. The winning store for Nova Scotia was the store in Windsor with 6,081 votes online.
