STELLARTON, N.S. — Stellarton has picked a new police chief. Mark Hobeck is expected to be formally chosen as the new chief at tonight’s council meeting, Sept. 9. He will be sworn in on Sept. 30.

“We’re very happy with the candidate we got,” Stellarton Mayor Danny MacGillivray said.

Hobeck has an extensive policing background, having worked as a policing services consultant for the Nova Scotia Department of Justice and also as a police officer with the Halifax Regional Police.

“He’s well recommended by people who worked for him in the past as a real team builder and a communications type of guy,” MacGillivray said.

Deputy Mayor Bryan Knight, who chairs the Stellarton Police Commission, said the town received 15 applications for the position and had candidates from across the country.

“We were pretty excited,” Knight said. “This guy comes with a long pedigree.”

In recent years, Stellarton has shared a police chief, Don Hussher, with the town of Westville. Hussher has announced plans to retire this year and Stellarton had made the decision to hire their own police chief.
