STELLARTON – Stellarton and Westville police are urging residents to be wary of scam.

“Businesses and persons across the province are experiencing scams sent by emails and faxes attempting to extort money by ways of threats,” police said in a news release.

“There have been victims verified in Stellarton.

The author claims that some sort of “extreme action” will be taken if the receiver does not send money electronically. At times, the request is to send money or simply click on a link to get more information.

Police are warning all public to be extremely cautious and to verify everyone you are sending money to or clicking on any links before you open them.

“Do not be threatened into taking action or sending money,” police said.

“Addresses like (Bitcoin) are not traceable. Your money will be gone and police cannot trace it. Clicking on links can take you into the domain of the scam where they can take control.”

Police caution that if it appears to be at all suspicious, it most likely is, so verify and delete any suspicious emails.
