A new name will be added to the Sunny Brae War Memorial on Nov. 11, that of John (Jack) William Sutherland.
Born in Sunny Brae on March 5, 1920, Sutherland was the son of Harry MacLeod Sutherland and Sarah Pearl Jack originally from Denver, Guysborough County. John started school in Bridgeville, Pictou County before moving to Lochaber, Antigonish County where he spent his teen years.
He was a veteran of the Second World War and served in Italy with the West Novies.
Returning from overseas he worked and lived in Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario and Alberta. When he retired, he and his wife Mary moved to Oliver, B.C. John passed away there on July 4, 2003 at age 81.
He was survived by his wife Mary, daughter Barbara, step sons and step daughters. Peggy MacPherson, John’s sister now resides in Plymouth Pictou County.
The Sunny Brae Remembrance Day Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 11. At the service, Clyde Macdonald will read a short bio of Sutherland. Warden Robert Parker of the Municipality of Pictou County will be the guest speaker. A lunch will be served at the IOOF Hall in Sunny Brae, catered by the MacDonald Rebekah Lodge.
