PICTOU, N.S.

The life and work of 32 remarkable Nova Scotians are featured in an exhibition at Pictou’s McCulloch House Museum.

Vanguard: 150 Years of Remarkable Nova Scotians profiles 32 people from the past century and a half, who exemplify innovation and change, while being champions diversity. It runs through Jan. 15, 2019.

“This was a wonderful project to work on, seeking out inspiring individuals from across the province who have made such a difference,” said researcher and writer John Johnston. “These women and men offer wonderful examples of Nova Scotians of today to admire and reflect upon.”

For each decade, the advisory committee, representing the province’s diverse communities, selected one person for the exhibit and another two that were posted for a public online vote.

The Nova Scotia Museum held a competition in early 2017 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Canada. It was to determine which notable Nova Scotians would be showcased.

Johnston researched a list of potential candidates from each decade from 1867 through 2017.

The exhibit has been featured at the Museum of Natural History, Ross Farm Museum in New Ross, and now, the McCulloch House Museum in the Town of Pictou.

“This exhibit highlights some of the Nova Scotian innovations and contributions that have made a significant impact, both provincially and nationally,” said Leo Glavine, minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage. “For every Nova Scotian profiled in this exhibit, we know there are dozens more also doing great things for our province and showcasing us on the world stage.”

The exhibit includes such notables as Chief Peter Wilmot, Rita Joe, Maud Lewis and Alex MacLean, among others. An online exhibit is also available at NSM’s website,  www.museum.novascotia.com

Admission to view the exhibit is by donation. Schools and community groups that wish to visit the exhibit should make a reservation by contacting McCulloch House Museum.
