Pictou town council is getting ready to talk about Veteran’s Drive.
Pictou Mayor Jim Ryan said during Monday’s council meeting that changes made to Veteran’s Drive in December 2017 will be discussed again in the near future.
“We will address the timeline and process during our meeting one week from tonight,” said Ryan.
Council will hold its committee of council meeting Monday, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. in council chambers.
In a vote of 3-2, Pictou council decided in August 2017, to turn a portion of the street one way in hopes of addressing concerns about speed and high-traffic volumes on the street.
This was done by placing cement barricades on one end of Veterans Drive with space for one vehicle to pass through. There is also an area for pedestrians and cyclists. Council had done two traffic studies on the street that connects Haliburton Road with Weaver Road. The most recent study shows the average number of vehicles on the road is 1,800 per day and that speed isn’t an issue.
Town staff recommended that, based on recent study results, the road remain the same as it is, but the town should increase traffic awareness through signs and educating the public.
Once the barricades were in place, a petition from residents opposed to the changes was presented to council and a local businessman offered to put in speed bumps on Veterans Drive free of charge if the barricade was removed. He also proposed, as a second option, to pay for the cost of stop signs on Veterans Drive and Hector Avenue to create a three-way stop if the barricade is removed.
Council said at the time it would table offer and consider it for future discussions.
