WESTVILLE – It’s a busy week in Westville.
Cruise Night is Thursday; Music in Acadia Park ,Friday and Kids Fest on Saturday, followed by the mayor and council ice cream social on Sunday .
But, of course, the biggest day of all is Monday, when Westville will once again hold its Giant Street Parade, beginning at 11 a.m.
Westville has become a centre of activity for Canada Day in Pictou County and organizer Tom Steele says they often see people from throughout the region come to watch and take part in other activities in town.
Planning begins in the fall for this summer event, but things have been particularly busy this year, as the Westville Fire and Rescue Department has also been busy leading the charge on upgrades to Victoria Park to address drainage issues that have caused a muddy fairground in the past. Thanks to volunteers and local businesses lending their support, the elevation of the park has been raised and gravel added. The Town of Westville has also put in French drains.
If all goes according to plan, the drainage issues shouldn’t be a problem this year and it’s a good thing, says Steele, given all the rain that’s fallen.
“If we hadn’t done what we did with the rain we had last week, we would have been in dire straits,” Steele said.
There’s still work to be done once the celebrations this week are done, but the groundwork has been laid.
