MOUNT WILLIAM
It is getting close to that time of year when people look at the presents under their Christmas tree and ask the big question.
“What do I do with all of this wrapping paper?”
Susan MacDonald of Pictou County Solid Waste says Christmas wrapping paper goes in the green cart and Stryofoam packaging goes in with recycling.
Here is a quick list of what to do with holiday extras.
Paper wrapping paper: green bin
Foil wrapping paper: garbage
Cards: paper recyclables with the exception of those that have glitter on them, which go in the garbage.
Styrofoam: plastic recyclables; no Stryofoam peanuts
Christmas lights: garbage
Tinsel: garbage
Ornaments: garbage
Artificial Christmas trees: Resuse. Possibly donate to a reuse centre or charity. Upcycle the item into something new.
Natural Christmas trees: tree collection dates will be announced later. Remove all tinsel, decorations, tree stands and plastic bags from the Christmas tree prior to collection. Please make sure trees are not stuck or frozen in snowbanks.
Holiday collection schedule – make-up days
So after the garbage and recyclables is sorted, the next question on someone’s mind might be, “When is my collection day during the holidays?”
If collection falls on Monday, Dec. 25, the make-up day will be Saturday, Dec. 23.
If collection falls on Tuesday, Dec. 26, the make-up day will be Saturday, Dec. 30.
If collection falls on Monday, Jan. 1, the make-up day will be on Saturday, Jan. 6.
