BRIDGEVILLE – Stacey Cummings knew there was a need to fill shopping bags for others.

The Bridgeville resident recently started her own company, The Shopping Bag, which provides a service to any person or business that can’t get their own shopping done or errands finished.

“The population is aging and right now there are more elderly people than there are children Canada-wide according to the latest census,” Cummings said. “There are shut-ins and people not able to get out and seniors who don't have families anymore to help.”

She discussed the business idea with friends and family and took a look at her own life before making the decision to start her own company.

“I was raised by an older person and now the woman that raised me is in her 80s. If not for me, she would have difficulty getting her errands done,” he said. “The other end of the spectrum is mothers of multiples who have a hard time getting out with children.”

She will also run everyday errands for professionals in the workforce and businesses as well.

Cummings said she knows from her own experience as a young mother that after her child was born she found it difficult to get her errands completed, especially living in rural Pictou County.

She worked out her business model with the assistance of Northern Opportunities for Business Limited as well as receiving input about a similar company in the rural southern end of the province. There are similar businesses in the Halifax area.

Her business rate is adjusted depending on the amount of errands she runs or items she purchases for a customer but it starts off at $15 for any errand or purchase under $100.   The rate increases slightly for purchases over $100 and $200.

She will provide her service in both rural and urban Pictou County.

Customers can contact Cummings via her Facebook page at The Shopping Bag or by calling 902-301-5262.
