Close to 200 participants walked and ran into the holiday spirit at the fifth annual YMCA Ugly Sweater Run on Saturday, Dec. 16.

“The run is a family event to encourage people to get outside, to get moving, and to spend time together being active,” said Heidi Sinclair, communication, community outreach and philanthropy manager, YMCA of Pictou County. “It is a fun way to kick off the holidays and what better way to spend a Saturday morning than at a community event with your friends, family, kids and dogs.”

This year’s event had new additions, including: a White Hot Chocolate stop, a mistletoe station, a candy cane station, and carollers. These stations were along the route that took runners and walkers through the “new” trail leading to the track and back.

Awards given out were:

  • Best Sweater – Natasha Auld
  • Best Pet Attire – The Kearley’s Puppy
  • Best Family Outfits – The Malenfant Family
  • Best Large Group Cheer – The Pictou Learn to Run Group

“Every year my daughter and I decorate our sweaters,” said Raylene Livingstone. “My family comes out to watch the run. It is important to me model an active lifestyle for my children and taking part in this run is one way that we do that.”
