SYDNEY, N.S. — If you’re looking for a thoughtful gift this holiday season, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation has you covered.

The Because You Care Holiday catalogue features 35 gifts that have a direct impact on hospital patients and their families.

“Essentially we’ve been looking at doing something like this for a number of years,” said foundation spokesperson Mark Inglis.

“We’ve seen that other charities worldwide do this, but we knew that it was going to be a big project to pull together.”

Inglis said the presenting sponsor for the project, the Colbourne family of businesses, has returned to match last year’s catalogue sponsorship of $10,000.

They will also once again provide up to $10,000 in gift matching.

The small gift booklet was sent out in Friday’s edition of the Cape Breton Post.

Prices for gifts range from $20 to support a healing garden at the cancer centre up to $400 to keep a family’s house warm this winter.

The program will be available year-round with catalogues available at Colbourne Ford and Colbourne Chrysler dealerships in Sydney.

This year’s catalogue follows the 2018 launch of the program, which helped raise over $56,000 through the giving of 419 gifts by 229 donors.

A brand-new catalogue cover features two local patients: 14-year-old Leigh-Anne Cox, who is fighting bone cancer, and eight-year-old Molly Aucoin-MacQueen who has the congenital disorder of glycosylation, which results in severe seizures, kidney problems and mental and physical limitations.

A partner of the program is the Caleb’s Courage campaign which designed gifts for children facing critical illnesses.

“I think it’s something that somewhat unites us, which is sometimes unfortunate, but none of us go through life without needing the care of a hospital,” said Kaitlin Colbourne on behalf of the Colbourne group which including her father Rodney and mother Donna.

“In Cape Breton we unfortunately have a lot of sick children and we have a lot of sick seniors, and the hospital is something that we’re always going to need and the care of the hospital is very important.”

This year’s Because You Care catalogue can also be viewed online at cbgivewhereyoulive.ca

As part of the program, donors will be sent a tax receipts for their donations, while a gift card will be sent to gift recipients informing them of the impacts being made to strengthening health care in Cape Breton.

Completed orders must be mailed or received online by the foundation office by Dec. 12 to ensure holiday cards will arrive to recipients prior to the holiday.

After that date, donors can visit the foundation office to pick up the cards for hand delivery.
