Three Pictou County cadets were honoured on Wednesday, Jan. 24 for their role in helping to save a dog that had fallen through the ice in Trenton Park on March 24, 2018.
Cadet Master Corporal Jonathan Pyrovolos, 14; Cadet Master Warrant Officer Caleb Wilson, 17 and Cadet Chief Warrant Officer Aaron Day, 18, were given Cadet Certificate of Commendation for the role they played to save the dog.
Speaking to The News, Aaron Day said that they were surprised to receive the commendation, but honoured.
The incident happened while the 219 New Glasgow Legion Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps was holding it’s orienteering day at Trenton Park.
Day, Pyrovolos and Wilson, as senior cadets were helping to supervise, when they noticed a dog in the water.
At first Day said he thought nothing of it, but soon realized that the dog was struggling and couldn’t get back up on the ice it had fallen through. The dogs honour soon appeared and grabbed the dogs collar
“She dove onto the ice and grabbed the dog, but she seemed kind of stuck,” he said.
He and his fellow cadets grabbed the woman feet and pulled her out.
The cadets made sure that both she and the dog were ok and offered them some hot drinks. The woman declined however.
Day said the whole thing happened so fast, they didn’t have time to think about it or be scared. They just instinctively helped.
He said they never expected any recognition for their act.
“We just thought we were doing something good.”
The Cadet Certificate of Commendation is awarded by the National Cadet and Junior Canadian Ranger Support Group Commander awarded to a cadet or cadets for outstanding deeds in attempting to save the life or property of another person.
