New Glasgow, NS
A local homeless shelter will open its doors next week.
Brian Bowden, chair of Viola’s Place Society, said there are enough volunteers in place to open the Marsh Street, New Glasgow shelter Oct. 26 for clients from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The shelter’s grand opening will be held Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. and everyone is welcome to attend to meet the society members, inquire about volunteering and see the shelter.
“We are still looking for volunteers and it’s an ongoing process in order to make it a go,” he said. “We have enough to start the process. The community has been great to us in purchasing the building and have things set up. It is a community effort and project so we are looking for support.”
He said ideally the society would like to see the shelter operate 24 hours a day, seven days, but that will depend on the number of volunteers available.
Bowden said he is unsure of the demand for the shelter’s services at the moment so the society is opening the doors to see who is in need.
“Our main focus is to open the shelter and have services there for them,” he said.
Donations of non-perishable food will be accepted once the doors are open next weekend. Anyone wanting more information on volunteering or donations can contact the shelter by email at [email protected] or through its Facebook site. Phone messages can also be left at 902-752-0550.
