NEW GLASGOW, N.S. – Laurie d'Entremont started Pictou County Spay and Neuter in 2013 with no real expectations of where it might go.
She only knew she wanted to make it easier for people to get their cats spayed or neutered.
Fastforward to 2019 and d’Entremont, with the help of other volunteers, has achieved a major milestone of seeing 400 cats neutered in the county through the program.
“I wasn’t even sure it’d get to one. There were quite a few people who didn’t think it would fly because it sounds odd.”
The group fundraises,  then uses the money to offset costs for people to have cats spayed or neutered who might not otherwise be able to afford it.
Pet owners are only required to pay a portion of the bill, $50 for females and $30 for males.
“My program raises the money for the rest,” d’Entremont said.
They organization keeps an account with each of the veterinary clinics in Pictou County so people can see the vet they regularly use and don’t have to worry about covering the full cost.
To get help, all people have to do is reach out through the Pictou County Spay and Neuter Facebook page or by email at [email protected]
Money for Pictou County Spay and Neuter comes from the organization’s fundraisers and donations from the public. The next fundraiser is scheduled for June 8 at Pet Valu, where there will be kittens available for adoption.
Now that she’s seen what’s possible, d’Entremont has higher expectations.
“I’d love to reach the 500 mark. Now I’m reaching a little higher.”
