Read it, love it, return it! ... and please tell us why, you did – or did not – like the books you’ve just read.
It’s the return of our fabulous Big Summer Book Club, for adults, library card holders ages 14-plus.
From June 1 until Aug. 31, when you return your library books, fill out a colourful sticky note with your anonymous reading observations to share, and then complete a ballot to win great prizes too. We’ll have monthly draws for cool reading socks and other items, and at the end of the program in August, there will be some grand prize draws, including gift certificates from the Holiday Inn.
Many thanks, to Adopt-a-Library Literacy program and all our community business sponsors.
Plant exchange
It’s time to get growing! The Stellarton Library is hosting a Community Plant Exchange on Saturday, May 25, from noon to 3:30 p.m. Perennials, herbs, veggie slips and houseplants welcome. Cuttings, bulbs, plants and seeds too. Donations welcome on Friday May 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and also on Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon. Please bring pots in bags (to prevent drops and messes, if you can), and please label the containers with plant name and colour, sun specifications if known, and any helpful tips, such as – this plant is a rapid spreader. Labels will also be available at the library.
This is a great opportunity for you to get together with other gardening lovers. For more information, contact the Stellarton Library at 902-755-1638.
Feature documentaries
On the big screen at the library, we have two feature NFB documentaries coming up.
The Pictou Library will be showing Up the Yangtze (2013 – 1 hour, 33 min.) on Friday, May 24 at 10:30 a.m. This award-winning documentary follows the Shiu family as their home is destroyed by the rising waters of China’s Yangtze River, a consequence of the Three Gorges Project, the largest hydroelectric dam in history.
Next week, the River John Library will be showing Love, Scott (2018 – 1 hour, 16 min.) on Thursday, May 30 at 6:15 p.m. This film follows the journey of Scott Jones, a young gay musician from Pictou County, who was attacked in downtown New Glasgow in October 2015, and left paralyzed from the waist down.
Workshop
Clean Foundation’s Northumberland Strait Coastal Restoration Project is co-hosting a free Coastal Restoration and Saltmarsh Solutions Workshop with the Pictou County Naturalists Club at the New Glasgow Public Library on May 30 at 6:30 p.m.
With easy to understand information and examples, the workshop will introduce the project, share volunteer opportunities, and empower community members to make informed decisions about the future of their coastlines by exchanging knowledge about the function and proper management of salt marshes and other coastal wetlands.
